Dream Interpretation - the meaning of dreams

Dream interpretation is the process of assigning meaning to dreams. In many of the ancient societies, including Egypt and Greece, dreaming was considered a supernatural communication or a means of divine intervention, whose message could be unravelled by those with certain powers.

The ancient Greek's constructed temples they called Asclepieions, where sick people were sent to be cured. It was believed that cures would be effected through divine grace through dreams experienced within their confines. Dreams were also considered prophetic or omens of particular significance. In ancient Egypt, priests also acted as dream interpreters. Hieroglyphics depicting dreams and their interpretations are evident. Dreams have been held in considerable importance through history by most cultures.

Dream interpretation was taken up as part of psychoanalysis at the end of the 19th Century; the manifest content of a dream (what is perceived in the dream) is analyzed to reveal the latent content of a dream (the underlying thoughts of the dream — why it was dreamt). One of the seminal works on the subject is The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud.

For example,

to see animals in your dream represents your own physical characteristic, primitive desires, and sexual nature, depending on the qualities of the particular animal. Animals symbolizes the untamed and uncivilized aspects of yourself. Thus, to dream that you are fighting with an animal signifies a hidden part of yourself that you are trying to reject and push back into your subconscious. Refer to the specific animal in your dream.

To dream that animals can talk, represents superior knowledge. Its message is often some form of wisdom. Alternatively, a talking animal denotes your potential to be all that you can be.

To dream that you are saving the life of an animal, suggests that you are successfully acknowledging certain emotions and characteristics represented by the animal. The dream may also stem from feelings of inadequacy or being overwhelmed.

Talking of places,

to see a beautiful standing building in your dream, signifies your destiny for luxury and plenitude. Never lose sight of the importance of having caring and loving people around you.

To see a castle in your dream, signifies reward, honor, recognition, and praise for your achievements. It foretells that your future will be a happy one, surrounded by the love of your children, generosity of neighbors, and comfort of friends. You are destined to a position of power, wealth, and prestige.

To dream that you are in a cemetery, signifies sadness and unresolved grief.

Psychics and Psychic Reading

According to Wikipidea, a psychic is a person who has abilities of extra-sensory perception, such as clairvoyance, psychometry, and precognition, or other paranormal abilities such as psychokinesis. The study of such paranormal abilities is called parapsychology.

The issue of whether or not psychic abilities are real is controversial within science; however, recent polls show a high instance of support amongst scientists and academics.
Parapsychologists have scientifically studied psychic abilities for over a century, and many have claimed that belief in some psychic abilities may be scientifically plausible. For instance, parapsychologists such as Dr. Dean Radin, a leading para psychological researcher and President of the Parapsychological Association, claim that psycho kinetic alteration of the output of random number generators is scientifically well-founded.

Mediums, like psychics, also claim to have extra-sensory abilities but claim to obtain their information from spirits or the deceased.

The Bahá'í faith acknowledges the reality of the potential of psychic ability, but characterizes many claims as false. Of the true ability itself, it is suggested that individuals do not seek to develop it as it is an unnatural condition perhaps hurting the development of the soul and the natural practice of that ability is from the next world. However there is a distinction between psychic ability and a gift of the Holy Spirit - while the former is to be avoided, the second is to be lauded and the first is often faked while the second is rare and precious.

A psychic reading is an attempt to foretell the future of an individual or group. There are many types, methods and systems of psychic or extra-sensory readings employed by those who claim to have psychic abilities. A professional psychic may have one or more specialized areas of expertise such as Psychometry, Distant Readings, Tarot Teading, Astrology or Horoscope Readings, Numerology, Palm Reading, Past Life Readings, Aura Readings, or any number of other methods.

Psychic readings include face to face readings such as in-person readings at home, psychic party readings for a group, and the less detailed and shorter psychic fair readings. Distant readings include internet readings, phone readings and mail readings. In some rare cases, a method of psychic sensing known as remote viewing is used.

Predicting the Future...

How far into the future can anyone actually see?

Most of us reject things like the prophecies of Nostradamus, or the psychic predictions of Jean Dixon. However, you're probably not reading this blog unless you're interested in understanding the future, like we are.

So, which predictions can we trust? (Our friend David Brin has recommended the establishment of a predictions registry. We like that idea.)

One good rule of thumb is that the further out the future is predicted, the less you should trust the prediction -- which becomes more true each year in this age of accelerating change.

The Long Now Foundation was established in "01996" to "creatively foster responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years." Sounds good, if awfully ambitious.

Similarly, the Foundation for the Future has good intentions for helping humanity make our way successfully through the next millennium.

Considering how much more change is expected in the next one thousand years than in the previous thousand, can we really expect to be better at forecasting the year 3000 than someone in 1006 would have been at seeing our time?

But never mind a thousand years. How about just predicting the biggest breakthroughs of the next 50 years? As part of their 50th anniversary celebration, NewScientist asked 70 of the "world's most brilliant scientists" for their ideas.

In coming decades will we: Discover that we are not alone in the universe? Unravel the physiological basis for consciousness? Routinely have false memories implanted in our minds? Begin to evolve in new directions? And will physicists finally hit upon a universal theory of everything? In fact, if the revelations of the last 50 years are anything to go on -- the Internet and the human genome for example -- we probably have not even thought up the exciting advances that lay ahead of us.

appeared in The Times (UK) on Nov 13, 2006 :

NOSTRADAMUS, Tony Booth and Christopher Biggins would seem strange bedfellows. Yet they share something in common. All have, at some stage, written about the end of the world. There is, admittedly, a difference between them. Nostradamus delivered his doomy predictions under the patronage of the French monarchy in the 16th century. The stars of, respectively, Till Death Us Do Part and many series of pantomimes, did so last year on behalf of the Daily Mail.

Cast your mind back 12 months. What then was the raging controversy? It was the proposed reform of the licensing laws. An editorial in the Daily Mail promised an apocalypse on a scale almost unimaginable. The police, it said, feared uncontrollable drunken yobbery, judges were forecasting an increase in violent crime, hospitals expected longer waits for treatment for ordinary, decent citizens as staff sought to cope with “ a flood of injured drunks”. As for the public, they faced “more no-go zones and vomit-splattered pavements in towns and city centres”.

In a conclusion calculated to strike fear into the heart, the self-styled mouthpiece of Middle England said: “We can only await the outcome of this wretchedly irresponsible piece of misgovernment: the legacy of a coarser, uglier, more disordered society bequeathed by politicians who never listen, never think things through and always imagine they know best.”

And who was recruited to serve as chief expert witness? Enter Tony Booth. In what he insisted was “not me taking a cheap shot at a Government that happens to be headed by my own son-in-law” (I believe him, I bet it was a well-rewarded shot), Mr Booth cited his many years of past alcoholic excess and, to paraphrase Enoch Powell, like the Roman he saw the Tiber foaming with much lager. The move was “wrong, muddled and dangerous”. The Continentals might be able to sip wine in the early hours of the morning but: “We drink in a more primitive, frightening Anglo-Saxon way. We drink to get drunk.” Some people, he prophesied, “will never be sober again”.
